“I’m really saddened by her passing” : President Cyril Ramaphosa pays tribute to the late singer and songwriter Zahara

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness over the death of multi-award winning singer and songwriter Bulelwa Mkutukana, who was popularly known as “Zahara”.

“Its a real unfortunate one. We have been robbed of a great talent. She was talented, vibrant, she was a wonderful composer and to be robbed of a talent at her young age is a real blow to our country,” said Ramaphosa on a video posted on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

“She is one of the great products that the country has produced in the arts, and I am really saddened by her passing.”

Messages of tribute have been pouring on social media platforms following the death of Loliwe hitmaker.

The talented afro-soul singer died at the age of 36.

The news of her passing was announced in tweet on X, by Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa on December 11 evening.

“ I am very saddened by the passing of @ZaharaSA. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry,” Kodwa wrote on X.

He added: “Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.

Zahara has been hospitalised for two weeks after following complaints about physical pains.

She won rose to fame with first studio album titled Loliwe, which was released in 2011. The album went double platinum in less than two weeks after its release.


The star won multiple awards including 17 South African Music Awards and three Metro FM awards.


Meanwhile, the date of her burial has not yet been announced.
