Multi-award winning singer and songwriter Bulelwa Mkutukana, who was popularly known as “Zahara” has died.

The news of her passing was announced in a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa, on December 11 evening.

I am very saddened by the passing of @ZaharaSA. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry,” Kodwa wrote.

“Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

Two weeks back, her family and team released a statement stating that she was hospitalised.

“Zahara has been admitted to the hospital for a week following complaints about physical pains. The doctors are working diligently and we await further updates from them,” reads the statement 


The afropop singer passed away aged 36 years old, however, the cause of her death is still unknown.

Zahara won the hearts of many people with her first studio album titled Loliwe, which was released in 2011. The album went double platinum in less than two weeks after its release.


The star won multiple awards including 17 South African Music Awards and three Metro FM awards.

South Africans took to social media to pay tribute to the singer and expressed shock about her death.


@Khabonina_Q wrote “ Rest young Queen! We love you ❤️❤️‍🔥,” on X.


“ Lala ngoxolo Bulelwa, Spinach, Zahara. You transfixed us with your immense gift. Your life was bold & extraordinary. You rose after each fall & nothing could dim your star 🌟 you healed so many…May your road ahead be filled with Light. Rest in Gods eternal peace 🙏🏾 #RIPZahara,” said @LifeWithThami.


@millicentmakhad wrote: “ Phendula song by Zahara is one of the songs that picked me up during my difficult times....Rest in peace sis Zahara.”


@Lady_Zamar said: “ zahara did a lot for the music industry in south africa…paved the way for so many others with her icon presence and guitar in hand💔💔she will be missed. i never knew her personally but her music was loud and brave #ripzahara praying for her family 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 she was loved ❤️.”
