UNISA honours ZCC leader Engenas Joseph Lekganyane with an honorary doctorate

The University of South Africa (UNISA) has conferred an honorary doctorate to St. Enganas Zion Christian Church leader, Bishop Engenas Joseph Lekganyane.
The prestigious ceremony was held at Unisa Muckleneuck campus, in Pretoria on October 27.
UNISA’s vice chancellor and former president Thabo Mbeki led the ceremony.
The esteemed spiritual leader of the ZCC is the latest eminent person to join the list of illustrious Unisa alumni when the university confers on him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology (Honoris Causa).
According to the statement released by the university on October 27, states that the university’s council resolved at its meeting on June 23, to confer the honorary doctorate on the church leader, Lekganyane in recognition of his outstanding achievements and globally impactful societal contributions to peace, social cohesion and social capital, as well as successful and resilient African-initiated institutions in the 21st century.

Lekganyane was installed as the Spiritual Leader and Bishop of the St. Engenas Zion Christian Church at a church conference held at Zion City, Moria, in 1975 and has since become the custodian and incarnation of the values and norms of the church as laid down by his predecessors.
“Inspired by the founding principles of the church and through his spiritual gift and sacrosanct leadership, he has sought to transform the Christian landscape in Africa and beyond, and diligently and consciously continues to do so,” reads the statement.
UNISA’s principal and vice-chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula in her keynote address said: “We are happy that you will be joining many of the University of South Africa students to become part of the building of the fabric of our society, our continent, and the global arena through the knowledge that this 150 years’ university will have made available to all of us.”

Standing on the podium and giving his speech of acceptance Lekganyane said: “ It is unfortunate that as mankind we often elevate our differences far beyond what they deserve and in so doing we fail to recognise the greater strength that lies within our combined efforts.”
He added: “Unity is still possible as illustrated by the period of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as participation in supporting different sport teams.”

Among well known political figures who graced the prestigious ceremony were, Deputy President of South Africa, Paul Shipokosa Mashatile, Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi and former Gauteng Premier, David Makhura.
