South African Police Service members celebrated the annual National Police Day through various physical fitness activities.

The men and women in blue flocked to the SAPS Tshwane Academy to celebrate the day through physical fitness activities and sporting codes, on February 15.

The day was celebrated by focusing on improving and installing the culture of physical fitness and wellness to the police officers.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said that the work of police officers demands them remain mentally and physically fit in order to execute their daily duties to combat crime.

The event started with a 5, 10 and 15 km fun at 05:30, then followed by an aerobics session, with police members also participating in various sporting codes such as netball and soccer.

The National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola including the provincial commissioners participated in the fun run and aerobics sessions as part of leading by example and encouraging members to participate in physical fitness activities and various sporting codes to remain mental and physically fit.

Masemola urged the men and women in blue to participate in physical fitness activities and sporting codes, “As it is important for their well-being and their daily duties demand that they be operationally ready to respond to the call of duty.”

In a bit to support and maintain health and physical well-being of its personnel, the SAPS signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) where all police officers will receive 20 percent off their monthly membership fee.

The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele urged members to take advantage of the discounted monthly fees by Virgin Active and Planet Fitness to remain physically fit and healthy in order to perform their duties effectively.

“You must stay fit, we need your fitness to arrest dangerous criminals. We need your mental wellness to investigate and ensure water tight cases to ensure lengthy convictions in court. We appreciate you for serving and protecting the people of South Africa.”

“Let’s do more to this year to clamp down on serious and violent crime. The partnership entered into with Virgin Active and Planet Fitness is reflective of the SAPS management commitment and priority to ensure that police have access to facilities and resources with discounted monthly fees to remain physical fit and healthy. Use this opportunity,” said Cele.
