Police nab six suspects for illegal mining in Ga-Phasha

Police in Limpopo have arrested six people for illegal mining.

It was during an illegal mining operation in Ga-Phasha, Mecklenburg area in the Sekhukhune District, on October 18.

The operation was aimed at eradicating the environmental degradation, safety hazards and illegal mining activities.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson of the police in Limpopo said: “Six people were arrested for illegally mining chrome while the equipments they used was confiscated and to be used evidence in ongoing investigations.”

 The suspects arrested were aged between 23 and 25 years.

Ledwaba added: “As part of the operation two more suspects aged 24 and 25 were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes and contravention of the Immigration Act.”

The six suspects arrested for illegal mining together with the other two suspects for possession of Illegal cigarettes will appear before Mecklenburg Magistrates Court soon.
