Adi fele: ‘Fake’ famous Tik Tok ‘Doctor’ Matthew Lani attended special needs school

Just when you thought you heard them all, The Gauteng Department of Education confirms that the so-called ‘Dr Matthew Lani’ does not have a matric certificate.

‘Dr Matthew Lani’ has been making rounds on social media platforms following his claims that he obtained a medical degree from Wits University and that he is a qualified doctor.

The Gauteng Department of Education released a statement on October 11 stating that it does not have matric records of the popular TikTok ‘Doctor’ Matthew Lani.

“There is no existing record of a National Senior Certificate (NSC), or matric certificate, for Matthew Bongani Lani.”

According to Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona the department’s official records indicate that Matthew Bongani Lani was initially enrolled at Bordeaux Primary School in Randburg in 2007.


“However, he was referred to Gresswold Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) School in Kew, Johannesburg in January 2010,” Mabona said.


“This followed an evaluation at the time, which determined that his 

academic performance dictated that he be transferred to an LSEN school.”

Additionally, he said, “Subsequently, his academic journey at Gresswold LSEN School came to an end in September 2012.”


Mabona pointed the fake doctor re-emerged on the department’s system in 2016, at Fourways Adult Centre, where he wrote 3 subjects as a part time candidate. However, he only managed to passed one of those subjects.


“Based on these records, and further verified information at our disposal from UMALUSI, we can confirm that Matthew Bongani Lani indeed does not possess a matric certificate,” Mabona added.

Dr Matthew Lani’ claimed that he obtained a medical degree from Wits University and attended Cambridge International College, however, on October 10,  both institutions dined having him on their systems. 

Additionally, the HPCSA also stated that the name ‘Matthews Zingelwa-Lani’ does not appear in the register of health practitioners.

The Gauteng Department of Health also opened a criminal case against the popular Tik Tok ‘Doctor’, while a second-year medical intern Dr Sanele Sobani Vambai Zingelwa, also laid a charge of identity theft.
