23-year-old man arrested for brutal killing of his grandmother in Mankweng, Limpopo

A 23-year-old man was arrested by the police in Mankweng township, Limpopo, in connection to the gruesome killing of his grandmother in Ramogale village, in Ga-Mothapo.

The 97-year-old woman was brutally murdered in her community on September 26 morning. Following her death, the suspect was then arrested on October 04.

According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the provincial spokesperson for the police said that the woman was attacked and stabbed to death with a sharp object by unknown suspects while at her home and her lifeless body was discovered by a relative at about 07:30.

“Police were notified and upon their initial investigations at the crime scene, the suspects were alleged to be unknown by family members,” said Ledwaba.

Ledwaba added, “A team of investigators including the Crime Intelligence Unit immediately commenced with investigations and in no time they cracked the case and uncovered evidence which connected the grandson who was also staying with the deceased.”

The suspect was then arrested at the same house in the Ramogale village.

According to investigations, the suspect also robbed the deceased of a large amount of money that she had been saving from her monthly social grants.

“Police managed to recover some of the cash hidden in the suspect's bedroom and other exhibits which included the knife which was found inside a pit toilet in the nearby tavern,” Ledwaba added.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on October 05, for charges of murder and house robbery.

Ledwaba reiterated that the police are investigating the case of brutal killing.
