Matric Results : Class of 2023 achieves a pass rate of 82,9%

Halala, the Matric Class of 2023 has achieved a pass rate of 82,9%

This was announced by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga on January 18 evening, at the MTN Innovation Centre, in Randburg, north of Johannesburg.

The national pass rate has increased by 2,89% from the 2022 pass rate of 80,1%.

A total of 897, 775 candidates wrote the National Senior Certificate. 

Meanwhile, 715, 719 full time candidates enrolled to write the examinations and of those 577, 983 passed, while 182, 056 candidates enrolled for part time.

Provincial Performance:


Free State province retained its one spot with a pass rate of 89,03%, an increase of 0,5% from 2022.

KwaZulu-Natal took the second place and improved with a pass rate of 86,4%, with an increase of 3,4% from 2022.

Gauteng achieved 85,4% with an increase of 1,0% from 2022, North West achieved 81,69%, an increase of 1,89% from 2022 and Western Cape achieved 81,5%, with an increase of 0,1% from 2022.

Eastern Cape has achieved a pass rate of 81,4%, an improvement of 4,1% in 2022.

Motshekga said Limpopo is the best improved with achieving a pass rate of 79,5%, an improvement of 7,4% from 2022.

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga achieved 77,0% pass rate, with an increase of 0,2% from 2023, while Northern Cape took the last spot with a pass rate of 75,8%, an improvement of 1,6% from 2022.

Passes And Admissions:


Motshekga pointed out that a total number of candidates who qualified to admission to Bachelor’s degree is 282, 894, while those who qualified for a Diploma pass is 187, 876.

The candidates who passed with Higher Certificates is 101, 973.
