The charges against the popular TikTok “Doctor” Matthew Lani has been dropped by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on November 01.

The popular fong-kong (bogus) doctor faced charges of identity theft and impersonating a medical doctor.

“Dr Matthew Lani” was nabbed at Helen Joseph Hospital, on October 29, after he was found trying to enter the hospital’s main entrance.

In a video that has been circulating on social media platforms after the charges were dropped, his lawyer Bongani Mabunda told the media outside the Johannesburg Magistrate Court that the so-called “Doctor” was making videos on TikTok for entertainment.

Madunda confirmed that “Dr Matthew Lani” is not a registered medical doctor.

“So, on it’s own is not impersonating and that is not a crime.”

Madunda added: “The hospitals the least that they could have done, was to ban him ( “Dr Matthew Lani”) from going to the hospitals and taking videos….and, if he were to continue with that, then he would be trespassing and they would have a case against him.”

“On the other hand, the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa), the least they could have done was to maybe interdict him or stop him from doing those videos, and if ever he were to continue doing videos it would be contravention, then at least there will be a case against him to answer for,” said Mabunda.

Meanwhile, according to the statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng states that it has decided not to enrol the case against the suspect who was arrested at the Helen Joseph Hospital on allegations of impersonating a doctor and/or misrepresentation.

NPA regional spokesperson in the province, Phindi Mjonondwane said: “There is currently no evidence to sustain the charge or link the suspect to the alleged offence.

Mjonondwana further said that they have instructed the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, to conduct certain investigations.

“Once complied with, the docket will be brought back to the NPA for a decision on whether or not criminal proceedings should be instituted against the suspect,” she said.
