Ayeye, Bogus TikTok “Doctor Matthew Lani” arrested at Helen Joseph Hospital

Fong-kong TikTok “Doctor Matthew Lani” was apprehended at Helen Joseph Hospital, on October 29.

The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that the fake doctor was apprehended while entering the main entrance of the hospital.


“Lani was caught just before 8pm disguised in a hoodie and wearing a surgical mask with a stethoscope around his neck,”  said Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson, Motaletale Modiba.

Just after being apprehended, he attempted to escape through the window after he requested to go to the bathroom.


He was then apprehended again, “When the security realised that he was making a run for it, they called for reinforcement, and he was subsequently apprehended again.”


Modiba added: “The police were immediately called. Lani has since been handed over to the police for an official arrest.”

“Doctor Mattew Lani” made headlines after he climed to have obtained a medical degree from Wits University and attended Cambridge International College on video that went viral.


However, on October 10, both institutions denied have him on their systems.


The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) also stated that the name of “Matthew Zingelwa-Lani” does not appear in the register of health practitioners.


The Gauteng Department of Health opened a criminal case as him, while a second year medical intern Dr Sanele Sobani Vambani Zingelwa, also laid a charge of identity theft.
